Update (07.05.2020) - *(11.05.2020)

As part of the staged and safe re-introduction of medical services to our patients, as we enter the next phase of managing the impact of the Coronavirus / Covid-19 pandemic, we are introducing a drive through facility at Anchorfield Surgery Ringmer. This will enable activities including vaccinations, blood tests, and B12 injections to be done in a safe environment with the aim of minimising risk of spread of infection for staff & patients alike.

This will utilise an enclosed tent, which will be installed outside the surgery, that is large enough for a car to drive into so that short procedures can be done, either in or out of the vehicle. This reduces contact with other patients and staff that would otherwise occur by entering the building. Privacy will be maintained with screens and enclosures. Staff will wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). We will take care to ensure that only appropriate procedures are undertaken, and if patients have any concerns in this regard this will be carefully considered. A screening process including temperature, checking symptoms and contacts will occur.

*Procedures held within this facility are available to patients who do not have access to a vehicle. Those travelling to an appointment on foot will be met by a member of clinical staff open arrival.

This is NOT intended to be a facility to assess or treat patients with Coronavirus infection.



A Covid ‘hot hub’ assessment site is now operational in Lewes, at River Lodge Surgery.

If you are concerned you have symptoms of Coronavirus please continue to access advice, in the first, instance via NHS 111 online, or by phoning 111 if you do not have computer access, or if your symptoms are becoming significantly worse.

Patients whom NHS 111 deem to require further assessment will be given a GP appointment time to attend River Lodge Surgery to see a GP who will meet them in outside, dressed in their PPE equipment, in the ‘hot hub’ assessment drive-thro facility.

For most patients, they will be assessed in their car; measuring pulse, oxygen levels and breathing rate. This will allow rapid safe checking of those patients where we need to decide who needs hospital assessment, who can be reassured and advised to continue self-care at home or who needs treatment for a coexisting condition.

This unit is working by appointment only, and we are not yet able to test specifically for the virus but are making quite accurate clinical diagnosis in the vast majority of cases.

The unit will allow rapid and efficient patient assessment in as safe an environment for staff and other patients as we can achieve.

Patients not thought to be at risk of having active Covid infection but needing face to face assessment for any other conditions will be given a GP appointment time at either School Hill or Anchor Field Surgery - the ‘cold’ sites. Please be aware, we are measuring the temperature of all patients on arrival. If your temperature is above 37.8 you may be re-directed to the ‘hot hub’ site if this is felt appropriate. This is for the protection of other vulnerable patients who may be attending the ‘cold sites’, and to minimise the risk of staff infection.

We would like to thank our patients for continuing to actively engage with social distancing, self-isolation, household 14 day quarantining and shielding/supporting those that are shielding. We are also grateful for the understanding people are showing in terms of the limitations the situation is placing on usual day-to-day healthcare. Proactive management of health conditions remains a high priority. We are extremely appreciative of the support and co-operation we have had from our local community pharmacies, as well as all the other community services working alongside us.

We confirm that due to recent developments in order to adhere to the guidelines for social distancing, please be aware that the doors to River Lodge Surgery, Anchor Field Surgery and School Hill Medical Practice are now closed, as of  Wednesday 25th March 2020.  

However Anchor Field and School Hill Medical Practice  are open for PREBOOKED appointments only.

* Ringmer site hours will be 8am to 4pm only during this time. 

We are operating a Telephone Triage System.  Do not go to the surgery if you have not telephoned first.

​​If you have an appointment: When you arrive at the surgery please ring the door bell and please stand behind the line when you enter. Please respect our staff and keep a distance of 2 metres on entering

Before entering you will be asked if you have a:

  • New continuous cough and/or
  • High temperature
  • If you have you will be asked not to enter and to contact 111 website or phone.
  • Emergency health needs call 999

Due to the current national crisis we will be suspending appointments for some of our non urgent services with our Nursing Team and we will be offering phone consultations for most of our GP appointments.  We are now working at reduced capacity and expect this to continue for some time. 

Important information about the coronavirus (COVID-19)

The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.

    • if you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. 
    • if you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill
    • it is likely that people living within a household will infect each other or be infected already. Staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community
    • for anyone in the household who starts displaying symptoms, they need to stay at home for 7 days from when the symptoms appeared, regardless of what day they are on in the original 14 day isolation period.
    • if you can, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period
    • if you cannot move vulnerable people out of your home, stay away from them as much as possible
    • if you have coronavirus symptoms:
      • do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital
      • you do not need to contact 111 to tell them you’re staying at home
      • testing for coronavirus is not needed if you’re staying at home
    • plan ahead and ask others for help to ensure that you can successfully stay at home and consider what can be done for vulnerable people in the household
    • ask your employer, friends and family to help you to get the things you need to stay at home
    • wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water, or use hand sanitiser
    • if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, or your condition gets worse, or your symptoms do not get better after 7 days, then use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service. If you do not have internet access, call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999

Testing of suspected coronavirus cases is carried out in line with strict guidelines. This means that suspected cases are kept in isolation, away from public areas of GP surgeries, pharmacies and hospitals and returned home also in isolation. Any equipment that come into contact with suspected cases are thoroughly cleaned as appropriate. Specific guidance has also been shared with NHS staff to help safeguard them and others. Patients can be reassured that their safety is a top priority, and are encouraged to attend all appointments as usual.

Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:

  • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.​

Welcome to River Lodge Surgery Online


Following on from our last notification regarding the merge of River Lodge Surgery with School Hill Medical Practice and St Andrew’s Surgery; we have now formed a Primary Care Network and we are pooling our resources in an endeavour to continue to provide our patients with the best possible service.

As a result of this collaboration we are now able to offer much more flexibility and availability of appointments from Monday to Saturday for certain services provided by your Practice Nurse team at any of the three Lewes sites; Your usual surgery, St Andrew’s Surgery Southover Road BN7 1US or School Hill Medical PracticeBN7 2LU.  We also have a late surgery every Wednesday evening at one of the three sites for ear syringing and cervical smear tests.  When you phone your surgery for an appointment the receptionist will let you know what is available and at which site so you may choose the most convenient. 

In addition we will be running a pilot scheme called The Green Hub from Monday 2nd September 2019 based at River Lodge Surgery for patients who need contact with a GP on the same day that they phone for an appointment.  Please note the receptionist will ask you for a brief explanation to ensure your call is dealt with by the most appropriate service.  You may be signposted to the local pharmacy or our Practice Pharmacist for advice or the Minor Injuries Department at Lewes Victoria Hospital.  Those patients allocated to the Green Hub will receive a telephone call from one of the triaging Doctors from any of the three Lewes surgeries.  If that GP decides the patient needs to be seen they will make an appointment with a GP or our Paramedic at RIVER LODGE SURGERY even if you normally attend our branch surgery in Ringmer. 

This pilot does not affect patients requiring contact with their usual GP or a member of their team for ongoing or non-urgent conditions.  Those appointments will continue to be made at your usual branch.  ​

In 1988, the practice moved from its old home at Castle Lodge to the new purpose-built surgery at River Lodge. The practice also operates from the branch surgery in Ringmer.

The partnership has existed since the 1930s .Today, all the doctors working long-term in the practice endeavour to honour & continue the ethos & spirit with which the original partnership was formed in order to provide holistic care, regardless of faith or beliefs.

Our team, across the two sites, includes eight GPs, four practice nurses, three Healthcare Assistants, as well as our Practice and Office Managers, Secretaries and Reception staff.

We offer a full General Medical Service (GMS) and run a number of specialist clinics (see Clinics and Services).

Online Services - Patient Access 

The Practice provides online services to patients wishing to book routine GP appointments and to request repeat prescriptions.

If you are interested in signing up for this service, please read the patient information leaflet below before completing the Registration form.  Please bring the registration form to the Practice for the Reception Team to process your request.  You will need to provide two forms of identification at the time you bring in the registration form (one should be photographic identification).  The Reception Team will then process your request and send out your registration information.
